Heritage: Founded in 1904 by the Society of Saint Edmund.

Location: 440-acre campus -- situated between the shores of Lake Champlain and the majestic Green Mountains -- in Colchester, Vermont, overlooking Burlington, the state's largest city.

Curriculum: Liberal arts. 29 major fields of study. Emphasis on: honors, independent study, independent research, internships, study abroad. Affiliated with the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society.

People: 1,900 students from 28 states and 13 countries (4 out of 5 from outside Vermont)

Residence Life: Nearly 100% of students live on campus in traditional residence halls, suite-style residence halls and townhouse apartments. 40-plus student organizations. No fraternities or sororities. All classrooms, residences and labs are wired for computer network access.

Admission: Competitive. 90% of entering students finish in the top half of their high school class. Completion of a college prep high school program, SAT or ACT required. Interviews are not required by recommended. The Early Action deadlines are November 1 and December 1. The regular application deadline is February 1.
