Sterling College

The Sterling Community

Our Students
Sterling students appreciate the link betweenacademics and real worldexperiences. They speak of a desire for education that is meaningful and relevant to their lives. They bring diverse experiences and backgrounds to campus. Although most students come to Sterling College immediately after graduating from high school, some enroll after taking time off for travel and work, and still others transfer from other colleges. Vermont students total 15% while another 41% come from the remaining New England states. We currently draw 44% of our students from 19 states outside New England. Our female population is slightly smaller (44%) than the male population. About 80% of our students live on campus while the other 20% commute from local communities.

Our Faculty
Sterling College faculty teach by doing—by working together with students everyday and by living with a passion for the earth and its human communities. They are accessible and students get to know them in diverse contexts, from classroom to dining room.

Our Community
Sterling requires commitment. Community is vital at the College and students play an important role in creating and sustaining our evolving community. Courses and experiences are deeply integrated and everyone—students, faculty, and staff—depends on each other. Each week the community gathers to announce upcoming events, share stories, and discuss issues of importance or interest. Everyone has a voice—and a responsibility to contribute.

From the Harvest Day on campus to peace marches in Washington D.C., from the intercollegiate Timber Sports to pick-up basketball and soccer, from Sunday Afternoon Porch Pickin’ to weekly art nights, students are engaged. Students define and coordinate activities and entertainment for the year. They are a talented, creative, active group of young people with a zeal for life, the environment, and the outdoors. Recreation opportunities in Craftsbury and the surrounding area include mountain biking, skiing (both XC and downhill), boarding, paddling, hiking, camping, climbing, and more.
