Green Mountain College

Green Mountain College

"We are a community of learners who think there is simply nothing more important than to study, understand, and preserve the environment."

Founded in 1834, Green Mountain College is proud of its rich heritage as one of the oldest academic institutions in New England. As we look to the future, the College will build on our history as we continue to establish our identity as an Environmental Liberal Arts College in picturesque Poultney, VT.

At Green Mountain, we pride ourselves on a strong tradition of hands-on education and personalized instructional style in a supportive, nurturing and creative environment, where students can find their niche and excel. GMC students actively pursue their academic interests: most recently, a class of Wildlife Ecology students ventured to a local bat cave that is open only with special authorization. A State Wildlife Biologist led the way as the students stood amazed in the midst of 23,000 brown bats! Additionally, Chemistry students have been researching alternate forms of energy, such as making bio-diesel fuel from vegetable oil. Pre-law students traveled to Washington D.C. to witness national court cases studied in class, while Adventure Recreation majors trekked to New Zealand to earn certification as wilderness educators.

Such active pursuit of interest pays off, as GMC alum secure jobs all over the world, whether it’s as a ranger for the National Park Service, a financial analyst for Salomon Smith Barney, the owner of an organic salad company, or a regional planner in for rural communities. The fieldwork and project-based experiments in the classroom, along with field-related internships are excellent opportunities that prepare GMC students for personal and professional success.

Active pursuit of interests is not limited to academics; GMC is a dynamic community with a bustling student life. You’ll be enjoying the lively music of various weekly bands, watching student-written plays in Ackley Theatre, and joining up with one of our many clubs – you need a lot of energy to keep pace with our students! We offer 14 NCAA Athletics, and we have an assortment of Health and Wellness activities ranging from yoga, pilates, aikido and kickboxing to acupuncture, massage therapy, and Reiki.

If you’re looking to stretch your legs, Poultney’s location provides easy access to vibrant cities such as Saratoga, Albany, and Burlington, and we’re only a train ride away from New York City. We’re also in prime location for skiers and snowboarders: Killington, Pico, Bromley, and Okemo Mountain are all within short driving distance. There are 400 ski and snowboard trails with an hour of our campus!

If you’re looking to stretch your legs a little further, GMC has exchange programs with the University of Wales and Hannam University in Korea. Looking to stay in the states? Then take advantage of the Eco-League, which connects GMC to a consortium of 5 small environmental liberal arts schools ranging from Alaska to Maine to Arizona. GMC students can spend up to two semesters at one of these other colleges, and can also participate in their international exchange programs.

To see firsthand what Green Mountain College has to offer, we encourage prospective students to schedule a campus visit for a personalized tour and interview. We are open 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on most Saturdays. For more information, please visit our website at admissions.greenmtn.edu.
